Starting A Business

In the fall of 2017, I started a business designing and installing LED lighting as a way to learn about the practical side of electrical systems and lighting design.

I have always enjoyed designing electrical systems, and in recent years, I became increasingly interested in LED lighting systems. After a few close friends and local business owners expressed interest in my lighting designs, it became evident that I may have a decent amount of support if I chose to turn my hobby into a business.

When I started my college career, I enrolled in a course titled the EDGE program. This course required me to complete a unique venture that was different from what I have done in the past. As a result, I decided to start my business as part of this program. In addition, this course gave me step-by-step guidance for documenting my project--a detail that would most likely come in very handy in the future.

So what exactly is this business? The overview is fairly simple, but the scope of what this business required was anything but simple. The purpose of this business is to design and build LED lighting systems from concept to reality. This entailed a great deal of cost estimation up front (as I provided initial quotes for all of my projects), and no single project was completed using pre-built designs. This meant that I had to design the entire system, from supplying power to the LED lights, to specifying the equipment required, to devising a way to integrate the equipment into the intended location. Most often, I was able to use pre-built components to assemble these systems, but there were occasions when had to build LED modules and various power equipment. The next level of difficulty came from installing these systems. Things like mounting the equipment and routing new wiring proved extremely difficult in some cases. On average, each project took around two weeks from concept to reality, with around one week on average spent designing the systems and optimizing them for quick installation. In the end, each project presented new challenges, but every customer walked away with a completely unique lighting system that had been custom built to perfectly suit their needs. As of today, my business is still in operation, with an ever-growing portfolio of completed projects.
